WebWorld News: Abdul Waheed Khan to receive Dayawati Modi Award today (17-11-2006 - Paris)


The prestigious ‘Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Culture and Education’ for the year 2006 will be given to Abdul Waheed Khan at a ceremony in New Delhi, India, today.
“The award recognizes Abdul Waheed Khan's outstanding contribution to education and development through innovative application of Information and Communication technologies” said Satish Kumar Modi, President of Dayawati Modi Foundation.


The other recipient of the award include Amitabh Bachchan, Jagjit Singh, Mother Teresa, Asha Bhonsle, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Jasraj and Tyeb Mehta.


Abdul Waheed Khan is currently UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information. He has worked for several international organizations such as UNFPA, UNDP, FAO, UNESCAP, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development and Asian Productivity Organization, and served as Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) from 1998 to 2000. He was also the Chairman of the Distance Education Council, which is responsible for coordinating all open, and distance learning programmes in India.


The Dayawati Modi Award is among the highest awards in India in the field of Art, Culture and Education. The award has been instituted by the Dayawati Modi Foundation for Art, Culture and Education of the Modi group in the memory of late Dayawati Modi, a philanthropist and educationist, wife of the founder of the Modi Group. The Foundation that has established schools and colleges, libraries and hostels for students, seeks to spread the knowledge of Indian art and culture through cultural shows, exhibitions and seminars.
