A course on Television News Production, funded by UNESCO Kabul Office and organized by Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), took place from 21 November to 16 December 2005 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“It has been a great experience, but I wish the programme could have been longer so that we could learn more” says Deena Rahman through an interpreter.

Deena was part of a team of 12 Afghan television professionals who attended the one-month training with the objective to improve their journalistic skills and technical competence according to acceptable international standards.

The training was organized in two phases:

Phase 1

A three-week intensive course on Television News Production took place from 21 November to 9 December. It was conducted by two experts from Canal France International (CFI):
  • Gilles du Jonchay, freelance journalist, formerly with France Télévision Group and producer/director of documentaries, in charge of the journalistic aspect and information; and
  • Philippe Radoux, reporter/head cameraman, specialist in filming and training in Asia and Africa, in charge of image production and editing.
Phase 2

A one-week (from 12 to 16 December) attachment to the newsrooms of RTM, TV3 and ntv7 in Kuala Lumpur.

The group included twelve professionals: one woman and eleven men. Most of them have attended basic courses in journalism and production over the last years conducted by various organisations in Kabul. Some of them were journalists or directors, three - cameramen and the others - video and sound editors in radio stations.

All participants were highly motivated for this training. The journalists were very interested in the techniques viewed. The cameramen were interested to learn new aspects of their work: e.g. how to enhance framing and composition; they also had a good practice in filming outside using both tripod and shoulder camera. The editors were very enthusiastic on the use of non linear editing system. It was quite a new experience for them, and they learned the importance of mastering both technical and narrative aspects of editing.

Emphasis throughout the course was placed on teamwork, like tandem cameraman/journalist in preparing and filming the story or video editor/journalist in editing and writing the final story. Every participant was able to appreciate the work of other members of the team, which will give them a chance to achieve a higher efficiency level.
