Civil Society

A partnership for promoting the Financing for Development (FfD) process

This subsection of the FfD website aims to provide some basic information on the critical role civil society plays in the Financing for Development process. It elaborates on various options to contribute and actively engage in the process and tries to clarify some important issues such as accreditation, funding, possibilities of networking and modalities of NGO participation in FfD-related intergovernmental events.

The Financing for Development Office in its multi-stakeholder approach is dedicated to support and facilitate the participation of all stakeholders in the Financing for Development process, including civil society. Non-governmental organizations have been involved from the outset in the Financing for Development process by providing important inputs, expertise and proposals to the International Conference on Financing for Development. Moreover, with their diverse voices and priorities, they are instrumental in the follow-up process to Monterrey. This view has been endorsed at the highest level in the Monterrey Consensus itself, which in paragraph 69 calls for civil society to stay involved and actively engaged in the process. In its resolution on Financing for Development (A/RES/60/188) the General Assembly calls for further mechanisms to strengthen the follow-up process including, multi-stakeholder consultations and workshops involving civil society.
