“I love you guys, I like your programmes…!” a Radio Salus listener shouted on 18 November 2006 expressing the view of all listeners who called in when the community radio based at National University of Rwanda celebrated its first anniversary of broadcasting.
Salus Radio which was started with support from the European Union and UNESCO was opened with a mission of serving the community and supporting the university mission of promoting education, research, and community work.

The only radio station of its kind in Rwanda is based in Butare and broadcasts in Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, English and French on FM 97.0. It provides educative, informative and entertaining programmes, while some of the aired shows focus on health, economy (business and poverty reduction), culture, religion, HIV/Aids and education, according to Havugimana Aldo, the radio director.

Radio Salus is also active in training future Rwandan journalists and has so far trained 40 students from the School of Journalism and Communication who produced the majority of the programmes. This has helped to reshape the negative image of the media in Rwanda, which was accelerated by the lack of professional ethics.

Radio Salus is listened to by almost two third of the Rwandan population in addition to a big audience also in neighboring Burundi and DRC. In September 2006, Salus was ranked third on the list of the best radio stations in Rwanda with its sports programme top rated.

Radio Salus is now a Voice of America affiliate and has several partnership agreements, for example with “Search for Common Ground”, a non-governmental organization, to produce programmes aiming at supporting peace and reconciliation in the region. Radio Salus is also working with SPREAD, a USAID-funded programme which Radio Salus assists in promoting fair-trade coffee production through its programmes.

Radio Salus is planning to extend its reach since a new transmitter has recently been installed on the major antenna in the capital Kigali. This will enable Radio Salus to quench the thirst of the Rwandans in need for professional and entertaining radio programmes.
