On Tuesday, 2 October 2012, the Permanent Mission of India organized a special event on the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence from 11:00 to 13:00 in the Economic and Social Council Chamber (NLB).
2011
On Friday, 30 September 2011, the Permanent Mission of India organized a special event on the occasion of the International Day of Non-Violence. The 2011 commemoration was focused on the theme, "Non-Violence as an instrument of social change – Why Gandhi Matters”.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Ramachandra Guha, Historian, and Mr. Phillipe Roman, Professor of History and International Relations at the London School of Economics delivered keynote addresses.
2009
On Friday, 2 October 2009, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Penthouse of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library in New York, there was a commemoration of the International Day of Non-Violence and release of a commemorative stamp by the United Nations Postal Administration.
2008
An informal plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate the International
Day of Non-Violence 2008 was held on Thursday, 2 October 2008 from 9.30 to 10 a.m.
in the General Assembly Hall. The ceremony included opening remarks by the President of the General Assembly as well as by the Secretary-General.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs of South Africa, H.E. Ms. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma;
and the External Affairs Minister of India, H.E. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, also addressed
Member States.
2007
The key commemorative activity that took place at UN Headquarters was an informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly on 2 October from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. where the Secretary-General made a statement. A briefing for non-governmental organizations was also conducted by the Department of Public Information on 11 October.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, in cooperation with the Government of India, organized the observance of the first International Day of Non-Violence on 2 October 2007 at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok. At this special event, India’s Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Development of North Eastern Region unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, a gift from India to UNESCAP.
