The Tokapu project was managed by the “Asociación Cultural Integración Ayllu-Wari” and by French filmmaker and anthropologist Elif Karakartal. It took place in Villa El Salvador, a district in Lima inhabited principally by Quechuas, who began to migrate from the Sierra to the capital in the 1940’s.

The target group of the project was the second generation of Quechuas living in Villa El Salvador, the children of migrants who have grown up in a multicultural environment, divided mainly into two different cultures, the indigenous and the non indigenous peoples. The objective of Tokapu was to initiate an intercultural dialogue between the “westernized” and the indigenous populations of Peru, and among people coming from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The project consisted of 3 phases: the training, the production and the broadcasting of the films. In the first phase, ten young Quechuas were trained in audiovisual production during 12 weeks. Courses included Quechua culture, focusing on several topics such as its history, its artistic expression, narrative skills and the Quechua insight of the world. In the second phase, eight 20 minutes’ video documentaries were produced and two more are being finalized. The last phase was dedicated to the broadcasting of the films. A first public screening took place in June 2005, in Villa El Salvador, gathering the directors, the trainees, collaborators, teachers, local authorities and the media.
