SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON DECOLONIZATION APPROVES REVISED PROGRAMME OF WORK

20000328

The Special Committee on the Situation with Regard to the Implementation of the Declaration of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, in a brief meeting this morning, approved the text of the revised programme of work and timetable of its substantive session, which is to take place in July.

Originally, the Committee was scheduled to meet in June. The changes became necessary as a result of heavy scheduling of meetings during that month, and the revised text reflects that conference facilities have been provided from 5 to 20 July.

The plan of work for the substantive session of the Committee includes the questions of the dissemination of information on decolonization and the dispatch of visiting missions to Non-Self-Governing Territories, as well as the situation in a number of such territories. The Committee will also hear petitioners and consider military activities by colonial Powers in Non-Self-Governing Territories and implementation of the Declaration on decolonization by the specialized agencies.

The Committee will hold its next meeting at a date to be announced.
