High-level Expert Group Meetings (EGMS)

As part of its analytical work, the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) in collaboration with other UN bodies regularly organizes EGMs. These meetings focus on persisting, new and emerging issues related to Africa’s development, peace and security.

Participants have included representatives of UN departments, programmes and funds and specialized agencies, Member States, academics, civil society, youth leaders as well as experts from a broad range of sectors and thematic areas.

OSAA also organizes high-level dialogues and panels in support of the General Assembly deliberations on Africa. The EGMs have been held both on the continent, and at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Outcomes

EGMs and high-level dialogues enable the Office to consult with stakeholders on selected topics of critical importance, and to generate substantive, analytical and action-oriented findings and recommendations.

Findings and recommendations serve as a basis for the Secretary-General’s Reports on Africa, including for the review report on the implementation of commitments made towards Africa’s development.

The EGMs also provide a space and platform for critical thinking, exchange of perspectives and views, critical evaluation and shared learning on subjects of critical and high importance to Africa.

Furthermore, the EGMs help identify:

  • Innovative approaches and best practices on how the issues raised can be addressed, and
  • The potential for replicating best practices toward addressing issues discussed at different levels, including by African authorities (both state and non-state), civil society and the UN.

In addition, the EGMs also generate policy recommendations that are generally directed not only at actors at local, national, regional, continental and international levels, but also at non-state and private sector levels for enhanced support for Africa’s peace, security and development as well as for strengthening partnerships in this regard.
