Meeting of the IDTFA: 2015 Report of the Secretary-General on the Causes of Conflict and the Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa (24 April 2015)

Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz (fifth from right at panel), Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Africa, chairs the high-level briefing on "The role of Africa’s Regional Economic Communities in Consolidating Peace, Security, Governance and Development in the Context of Agenda 2063" (1 October 2014).

On Friday, 24th April, 2015, the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) convened the meeting of the Interdepartmental Task Force on African Affairs (IDTFA) to discuss the modalities for preparing the 2015 Report of the Secretary-General on the Causes of Conflict and the Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa. The IDTFA meeting will take place in DC1 – 821, 8th Floor, UNHQ, New York, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The meeting, which brought together representatives of the United Nations System entities that are working on/in Africa, will provide both a platform and opportunity to highlight pertinent issues and developments, as well as challenges and lessons that should be incorporated in the report. The African Union Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations in New York also participated in the meeting. This coordination and collaboration between the United Nations and the African Union is no doubt vital for ensuring that our respective institutional perspectives, expertise and experiences collectively enhance the quality of the report.

The report of the Secretary-General on the Causes of Conflict and the Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa is an annual report that is submitted to the General Assembly and the Security Council. This year, the thematic focus of the report will be on the Role of Regional Organizations in Democratic Governance in Africa.

Democratic governance is a core component of the 50th Anniversary Solemn Declaration PDF and Agenda 2063 PDF. In this respect, the implementation of Agenda 2063 provides regional organizations, including the African Union and RECs, with new opportunities to address these issues in an integrated, systematic and coherent manner. The report will aim to proffer concrete recommendations on how the United Nations system can support African regional organizations in their quest and efforts to consolidate democratic governance.
