A Global Response to HIV & AIDS

Global HIV prevalence map, 2009 (UNAIDS)

UNESCO designs and implements programmes that are global in scope, but are also adapted to the needs and specific contexts of Member States. By working closely with international agencies, governments, and civil society organisations around the world, the Organization works in a context-specific and sustainable manner.

As the region most affected by the AIDS epidemic, Africa is one of the top priorities for UNESCO's response to HIV and AIDS. Other priority regions include Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa. Member States are served by a global network of multi-disciplinary UNESCO regional bureaux, cluster offices, national offices and liaison offices (detailed here).
