Official visits of the Director-General in West and Central Africa

From 6 to 12 August 2016, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, will undertake a series of official visits to West and central Africa. She will visit Senegal, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, to discuss and strengthen UNESCO's programmes across the region, notably in the fields of education and in preventing violent extremism.

In Senegal, Irina Bokova is expected to meet with the President of the Republic, H.E. Mr Macky Sall, and Ministers in the fields of competence of UNESCO. She will also visit the vocational training center and madrasa in Mbao, and literacy classes for disabled in Derklé. 

In Chad, the Director-General will participate in the investiture ceremonies of the reelected President H.E. Mr Idriss Deby Itno, at the invitation of the President, and she will discuss environmental preservation and safety issues around Lake Chad. 

In Niger, the Director-General is expected to meet with the President of the Republic H.E. Mr Mahamadou Issoufou, the Prime Minister Mr Brigi Rafini, and the Ministers working in UNESCO’s fields of competence. She will also explore the Boubou Hama National Museum, bringing together rich collections of cultural heritage of Niger and training  to professions in the field of culture, teaching and tolerance, in homage to Boubou Hama, intellectual and statesman for peace. 

In Nigeria, the Director-General is expected to meet with the President of the Republic H.E. Mr Muhammadu Buhari, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Geoffrey Onyeama and the Minister of Education Mr Adamu Adamu. 

These Official Visits will provide an opportunity to discuss ongoing cooperation with UNESCO in a number of key priorities for the Organization and in relation to the African Union Agenda 2063 and to reaffirm UNESCO's commitment to strengthen its action in support of societies and Governments in Africa, a Global Priority for the Organization. UNESCO is supporting the African States in their efforts to deepen stability, peace and prosperity, notably within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
