Memory of the World

UNESCO's programme aiming at preservation and dissemination of valuable archive holdings and library collections worldwide
10th Meeting of the

10th Meeting of the "Memory of the World" Sub-Committee on Technology, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt, 18-20 November 2008.
The SCoT meeting took place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina with all members present. On the agenda was the mandate of the Information For All Programme Multi-stakeholder Working Group on Information Preservation and SCoT’s contribution to this, as well as the identification of other partners and their involvement. There was consensus that SCoT should constitute the core of the Working Group as it has been engaged in this area for 14 years and is fully versant with the various strategic issues that need to be addressed. Other partners to be involved could be from companies or bodies already active in preservation.

The meeting discussed a methodology to determine the impact that listing on the Memory of the World Register has had on an item or collection. A brief questionnaire has been devised and will be sent to all custodians of inscribed heritage. The issue of training was also examined by SCoT. It was agreed that there were too many courses with too little impact as often the right persons were not selected by their institutions. SCoT also agreed to an update of the preservation booklet it has produced, to include traditional materials and to revise individual sections as needed. This booklet provides short, clear, practical advice in a non-specialist language to guide choices in preservation. Currently available only in electronic form, a print version of the revised document is envisaged.

Finally, SCoT discussed how to proceed with the open source repository project for which IFAP funding has been provided. The meeting agreed the terms and conditions as well as functionalities needed to develop and test the project. Instead of starting from scratch, it was decided that relevant parts of different open source software packages would be used to produce one ideal whole.

The SCoT meeting was ably organized through the Bibliotheca Alexandrina which is one of the partners in the World Digital Library prototype and has much to offer other libraries interested in digitizing their collections.
