General Assembly resolution 69/269 of 2 April 2015 provides the statute of the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize, including details on the aim of the Prize, its description of the Prize, the nomination process, and the composition of the Committee for the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize.

General Assembly resolution 68/275 of 6 June 2014 established the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize.

General Assembly resolution 64/13 of 10 November 2009 designated 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day, which has been observed by the United Nations every year since 2010.
