Once every five years, the Committee for the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize presents an honorary prize to two individuals (one female and one male), as a tribute to the outstanding achievements and contributions to the purposes and principles of the United Nations. The Prize, which was established by the General Assembly in June 2014, in resolution 68/275, was presented for the first time in 2015 through a streamlined process in accordance with the Statute and General Assembly resolution 69/269 of 2 April 2015.

The 2015 United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize was awarded to Dr. Helena Ndume of Namibia and Mr. Jorge Fernando Branco Sampaio of Portugal who had been selected by the Committee. More information on the 2015 Laureates can be found here. The award ceremony took place on 24 July at United Nations Headquarters in New York during annual commemoration of the Nelson Mandela International Day.
