The level of media development in Puntland, Somalia is low due to lack of resources and expertise as well as decades of war. Puntland State University (PSU) is committed to filling this gap and is ready to operationalize its Campus Radio Station. It has established a Media Training and Resource Centre, attained government permission for the radio station and, in 2011, equipment was procured by UNESCO. The station will cover community issues including, governance, rule of law, youth unemployment, environmental conservation, the plight of IDPs, piracy, FGM/C, terrorism and HIV/AIDS.
The project will pilot UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education course on Broadcast Reporting and Writing (radio and television) to 20 third-year undergraduates (10 women and 10 men) at PSU Campus Radio. It will prepare them to report, write and present news, features, and interviews for radio, television and community radio.
A 1-week training course on New Digital Broadcasting Technologies took place on 15 October 2014 at the Online Distance e-learning department at Puntland State University in Somalia. It equipped 20 journalism students (10 men and 10 women) with skills to enhance their operational skills at the campus radio. In 2015, a 5-day training course took place on Radio Station Essentials for 5 staff of the Puntland State University radio station (3 men and 2 women), which resulted in 4 daily programmes produced by the radio station. The radio station also organized a 2-day seminar to sensitize the community, university staff and students on the use and impact of the radio to the community.
UNESCO's cooperation with Puntland State University and its continued support and engagement with the media through Somali Media Sector Group (SMSG) provided a good opportunity for the implementation of activities as specified in the SMSG strategy. Through the activity, higher education institutions in Somalia were supported to contribute towards a strengthened free, independent and pluralistic media.
