Now Available: Korean translation of Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development and Women’s Empowerment

Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development and Women’s Empowerment, first published by UIL in 2014, examines how different kinds of literacy emerge from or support various development approaches and explores how women engage in such processes. This book not only investigates ‘what works’ in terms of encouraging women to participate in programmes, but also looks at how and why literacy programmes can contribute to sustainable development and women’s empowerment. The publication is based on the belief that we must take an in-depth and nuanced look at literacy learning and development practices in order to address the challenge of narrowing the gender gap in literacy attainment. Current statistics estimate that women constitute two-thirds of the world’s non-literate population, a fact that has been a major cause for concern for policymakers and other stakeholders for many decades.

The Korean translation of this volume (9 MB, PDF) has just been published by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU). Since the 2015 World Education Forum, sustainable development and quality learning have been key issues for NGOs, researchers and government agencies involved in designing overseas educational development programmes in the Republic of Korea. KNCU believes that the Korean translation of Literacy and Education for Sustainable Development and Women’s Empowerment will be a valuable resource for all those who work in the field of international development and education.
