Building Institutional Capacity of Mass Communication Department at the National University of Laos
In 2004, the National University of Laos launched a Bachelor's degree course in Mass Media. Although this was undoubtedly a positive development, the quality of the teaching was hindered by the fact that staff tended to be from a background in Lao Language Literature, with very limited knowledge in the field of journalism. The university has therefore made capacity building of its staff a priority in an effort to raise the standard of education being delivered. This project will build on the work which has already been initiated in this field with UNESCO's support, in order to offer training to a target group of 20 lecturers and 5 students from the university's Department for Lao Language and Mass Communication. In attending workshops and seminars, the trainees will acquire sufficient knowledge and practical skills in television broadcasting, including the development of story ideas, assignment of stories, writing, editing, the setting-up of newscasts, the conducting of interviews in the studio and field, as well as other related content. In achieving its objective, this project will contribute to the development of a trained network of trainers, thus ensuring sustainability and an improved quality of future journalists. OBJECTIVE To equip a group of 20 lecturers and 5 students with the necessary knowledge and skills required for television broadcasting, in order to create a network of local trainers and thus raise the standard in the quality of journalism education being delivered.
