Development of online safety training system in Mexico and Central America
Violence against media workers and impunity of the perpetrators of such crimes are widespread in Mexico and Central America and have resulted in many deaths. These crimes require adequate safety measures, particularly for journalists working in remote areas who are most at risk. This project will build and launch a sustainable online training system for journalists, available anytime and anywhere within Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico.
An online course for capacity building concerning the safety of journalists took place in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico during February and March 2015. In each country there was a local tutor available to support participants by email and telephone. Six modules were offered via MOODLE, an online learning platform. The topics covered were: personal and collective safety for journalists; obligations and mechanisms of the state, and legislation on the journalistic profession; legal means for protection; basic questions concerning self-protection, risk analysis, methodology of protection for the journalistic profession; risks associated with using information equipment; good practice, management and protection of information; and personal protection.
