IPDC Project scope: National

Provide 20 female members of the Association des femmes comoriennes de la presse (AFCP) with a 1-week course on the production of news reports and on conducting media interviews so that, on completion, they will be able to perform their jobs in their respective media houses in full knowledge of the rules applicable to news processing while adhering to the ethical principles and values of the profession.

Suriname has 19 television stations, 34 radio stations, 4 newspapers, 9 community radio stations, approximately 10 journals and about 9 new media news sites. The State owns 1 radio station 1 one television station. The rest of the media is privately owned. About 150 journalists are working at the media. The media sector employs mostly ‘self-made’ media workers who largely need to be educated and trained. The aim of the project is to contribute to training in investigative journalism and in so doing remove the main obstacles to in-depth, high-quality inquiries. The message that needs to be driven home is that there is no quick and easy way to produce good articles, and that investigations that require time and effort are always worth it in the end.
