In spite of their limited print runs, the papers in Somalia, especially the more independent ones, have been known to have had an edge that more than shaped up the destiny of this tiny nation (3.5 million). They consistently championed issues that touched the day-to-day lives of the man on the street: freedom of expression, individual rights, women rights, the right to justice, health and education, and the right to choice. This proposal is therefore meant to seek support to the setting up of the Campus Radio station and telecentre. The Campus CMC will serve as a reference point for both...

Most journalists operate in ill-equipped offices with little research materials, and lack reference centres and a media library. It is therefore necessary that a university multimedia Centre including a university radio station and an ICT Centre be established which would not only serve the university community but also benefit the media professionals in Puntland. The Puntland community also lacks the Internet and a library where they can look for references, undertake research activities and turn in for...

Palestinian online media is generally in its starting phase, but some news websites are becoming popular. The high number of the public and private media organizations in a society with less than four million inhabitants does not reflect that the Palestinian media is fully professional, independent and pluralistic. Indeed, there are many challenges, lack of...

The Dominican Republic's issues regarding freedom of expression no longer revolve around government censorship. It is of a new kind of restraint that journalists and editors complain about: the dictatorship of publicity and of the owners of media enterprises, who are often business people involved in other types of activities at the same time. In this context, a process of self-censorship has flourished. News gathering and publishing are headed towards a comfortable, light vision of reality. Conflict is avoided and good journalism is dying. Closely related to this problem, is the academic...

The project therefore intends to provide proper equipment to the Communication Studies Unit of the University of Mauritius in order to offer appropriate training to students who aim at working in the mass media. The Unit has been running a programme in communication and media for a...
