IPDC project priority: Community Media Development

This project aims to create a community multimedia centre (CMC) in the rural town of Sogakope. The CMC will provide training to youths and improve computer literacy among students, women and other categories of the public. It will also introduce Internet service as soon as telephone lines are installed in the area. This project will reach a specific marginalized community and promote a participatory social development agenda. It will address issues such as farming, fishing, petty trading, dressmaking, illiteracy, poor school attendance, inadequate health facilities, the threat of HIV/AIDS...

Nepal was the first country in South Asia to allow non-governmental groups to broadcast on the FM band when Radio Sagarmatha 102.4 went on the air in 1996 in Kathmandu Valley. Since then, 45 other FM stations have gone on air. By early 2005, listenership had surpassed that of the state-owned Radio Nepal. It has been widely recognized that community radios in Nepal basically offer a model as no other media does. After the restoration of democracy in 1990, their role has been significant in reaching out to grassroots level, disseminating locally relevant information, strengthening local...

This project intends to focus on the training of young community members in the production of community-based video programmes for broadcast over local cable networks, in an effort to give a voice to the ordinary people of two communities in Gujarat: the slum pockets of Ahmedabad and the semi-urban town of Halol. The project requires purchase of equipment so that newly trained community members can practice their skills. The larger portion of this will be undertaken by the implementing body. The immediate objectives of the project are to: Undertake two 8-week video-production workshops for...

Community radio is a new sector emerging in Burundi. It needs support from donors, the government and other stakeholders in order to acheive sustainability. The Dushirehamwe women's community media network has established a Peace Documentation Centre with seed funding from UNESCO. This project seeks to establish a community radio station at the documentation centre, with a view to increasing direct participation of community groups, particularly its women members, in dialogue and decision-making processes through a variety of braodcast programmes aimed at the promotion of peaceful co-...

Launched in 1996, TV ROC's community channel is available to subscribers of TV ROC Cable. The community channel transmits educational and cultural programmes, community news and events, promotes local debates, offers free services (e.g. notifies the community of vaccination campaigns, publishes information about free courses, etc.). Due to TV ROC's enormous involvement in the daily life of Rocinha's shantytown of, a high-quality programming content is a crucial factor in the channel's development and success. The programming is developed through a partnership with non-governmental...

Pengwende Women's Association has been actively involved in community development for more than a decade in the Sabou area which comprises 68 villages. Through various community projects, the Association promotes a participatory approach to development at the grassroots level. In rural and semi-urban areas like Sabou and its surroundings, radio is the most effective medium. Despite poverty in the area, most households have their own radio receivers. The project therefore proposes to establish a community radio station combined with a telecentre in Sabou. This will help to catalyse...

The present project is seeking to develop the existing Karagwe information / resource telecentre managed by the Family Alliance for Development and Cooperation (FADECO) into a fully-fledged Community Multimedia Centre (CMC), by launching a community radio within its premises. The project plans to upgrade the centre's facilities in order to extend the dissemination of locally generated information to a wider population in the Karagwe district. The FADECO information resource centre currently provides access to data networks: Internet, e-mail, access to electronic libraries and databases,...

The immediate objective of this project is to start a youth-based community radio station in Nablus, in the West Bank. The Palestinian House of Friendship (PHF), implementing the project, currently undertakes initiatives such as summer camps, art projects and workshops to strengthen the Palestinian community by focusing on its youth. Such initiatives however, are expensive, target mostly young children and are limited in their reach. Radio is a cost-effective alternative that has a broad scope, a diverse audience and maximum possibility for participation on many levels. A radio station has...

Penc Mi FM 90.6, Senegal's first community radio station, has been serving the rural populations of the Sessene, Fissel, Thienaba, Tattaguine and Ngoye districts since 1996. Penc Mi FM works very closely with ISRA, the Agricultural Research Centre of Mbambey, in support of its extension activities with farmers. Community radio stations, and in particular those, like Penc Mi, in rural areas, face difficulties linked to population migration. In addition, Penc Mi has coverage problems and its staff lacks training. This makes it difficult to transmit development messages properly to the...

In June 2000, the General Assembly of the Association for the Promotion of Community Radio (APRC) ruled on the creation, in Nafouta-Tessaoua, of Radio Zinariya, which means 'gold' in the Hausa language. The radio was officially recognized by the Interior and Decentralization Ministry in December of the same year. The Nafouta community then joined together to build a structure for the station. It comprises two rooms: a technical studio and broadcasting room, and includes a video film projection area for young people. At its April 2005 meeting, the General Assembly of the APRC decided to...
