Gender and Minorities Mainstreaming in Journalism Education at African University College of Communication (AUCC)
In spite of recent developments in the standard of journalism and communication education available in Ghana and the West African sub-region today, there remains scope for this field to be strengthened. The African University College of Communication (AUCC) located in the heart of Accra is willing to embrace this challenge by welcoming the opportunity to introduce the UNESCO Model Curricula into its programme, in order to build upon its reputation as a leading institution in delivering high quality journalism education. This project will see the adaptation of the AUCC Curricula, incorporating minority perspectives and gender mainstreaming within the programme. Consultative meetings will be held with faculty members and consultants, and students will also be involved in the process, leading to the production of a best practice document. Materials will then be purchased and equipment provided for a Resource Centre, thus ensuring the project's continuity for the benefit of future generations of journalism and communication students. The overall focus of this adaptation process will be on engendering a spirit of understanding and tolerance across the sub-region of West Africa for the promotion of gender equality among other social imperatives.
OBJECTIVE: To incorporate UNESCO's Model Curricula within AUCC's journalism and communication programmes, prioritizing gender mainstreaming and reflecting perspectives of minority groups in order to provide high quality journalism education.
