Setting Up the Community Radio, 'Radio Brico'
The Malian media sector has undergone significant liberalization and development following the advent of democracy in 1991, with the country boasting some 241 private radio stations in 2010, according to a survey conducted by the media union, URTEL. However in spite of this apparently vibrant media environment, radio coverage is unevenly distributed across the country, with some communities continuing to be deprived of their right to access media and information sources. One such example is the rural commune of Sirakoro, which currently has no local radio, and only sporadic reception of the national station. In spite of being regarded as one of the country's main cultural-heritage and tourist sites, the area remains largely neglected with its development hindered by its isolated situation. This project aims to address the problem by setting up a community radio covering the entire rural commune of Sirakoro in order to strengthen its inhabitants' participation in social and democratic dialogue. It will provide and install the necessary equipment, and provide training to two general operators in various radio genres as well as the technical management of the station. In attaining its goal, the project will give a voice to community members and allow them to access information on relevant issues such as sustainable development and preservation of the cultural heritage of their community.
OBJECTIVE To provide equipment and training of staff members in order to set up a community radio station which provides information on relevant community issues and allows community members to voice their concerns.
