South Sudan: UNICEF sounds alarm on ‘catastrophic’ food insecurity in country
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said today that it was responding to a growing food security emergency causing malnutrition in children in both rural and urban areas of crisis-gripped South Sudan.

Note to Correspondents -- Board of Inquiry Report on Malakal
The Department of Field Support (DFS) has transmitted to Security Council members the executive summary of the UN Headquarters Board of Inquiry Report on the circumstances of the clashes that occurred in the UNMISS Protection of Civilians (PoC) camp in Malakal, South Sudan, on 17-18 February 2016, which resulted in approximately 30 internally displaced persons killed and 123 injured. As agreed with the UN Security Council during a briefing on 22 June, DFS is also today publicly releasing this Executive Summary [scroll down].

Secretary-General's message to the Extraordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the IGAD Plus
I commend the collective resolve of the IGAD leaders to contribute to the resolution of the crisis in South Sudan. Since we met at the IGAD summit in Kigali, the security situation has deteriorated significantly. Reports of fighting over the past several days, coupled with other developments, have created political divisions within the Opposition and risk jeopardizing the entire peace process.

Ban hails EU donation to African-led Lake Chad Basin task force combating Boko Haram
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has commended the European Union (EU) Commission for its 50 million euro contribution to the multinational task force, created by Lake Chad Basin countries – Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria – and Benin to combat Boko Haram insurgents in the sub-region.

    The Secretary-General welcomes the signing of an agreement between the European Commission and the African Union Commission, in Brussels on 1 August 2016, for a €50 million European Union contribution to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), an initiative of the Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin to combat Boko Haram in the sub-region.

Preliminary United Nations investigations into the recent fighting in South Sudan reveal Government security forces carried out killings and rapes, and looted and destroyed properties, the UN human rights chief said today, calling on the Security Council to take stronger action.

United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien concluded today his three-day mission to crisis-torn South Sudan, voicing serious concern at the humanitarian situation in the country and in particular the violence against civilians, as well as attacks against aid workers, which is hampering efforts to respond to the needs of the people affected by the fighting.
