“I condemn the murder of Pedro Tamayo Rosas,” the Director-General said. “I call on the authorities to investigate this killing and bring its perpetrators to justice. Guns must not be allowed to circumscribe press freedom and freedom of information, both of which are essential for democracy and rule of law.”

Pedro Tamayo Rosas, a reporter for daily newspapers Al Calor Politico and Piñero de la Cuenca, was shot outside his home. He had been under police protection since he began receiving threats in January this year.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
