Director-General meets German State Secretary Stephan Steinlein
UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, H.EM. Mr Stephan Steinlein, State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, and HE Ambassador Michael Worbs, Chair of UNESCO Executive Board, and Permanent Delegate of Germany to UNESCO.
On 14 March, the UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, met with H.EM. Mr Stephan Steinlein, State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, in Berlin, in the presence of HE Ambassador Michael Worbs, Chair of UNESCO Executive Board, and Permanent Delegate of Germany to UNESCO.
This meeting took place in the context of the mission of the Director-General to Berlin to speak before the International Parliamentary Conference on Combating Antisemitism.
This meeting provided an opportunity to review the strength of cooperation between UNESCO and Germany, across the full range of UNESCO's mandate. Irina Bokova started by briefing the State Secretary on UNESCO's action to advance Holocaust education, to fight racism today and prevent genocides, working with countries across the world.
The discussion followed on UNESCO's leading work in education to prevent violent extremism as well as in promoting education for global citizenship, with the support of Germany. The importance of TVET was also underlined, for Germany and countries across the world.
The State Secretary and the Director General reviewed the role of UNESCO in taking forward the 2030 Agenda, where the areas of competence of the Organisation are particularly relevant. Discussion followed on the reform of UNESCO, including as a specialised agency of the UN system, and with regard to sources of funding.
In ending, the State Secretary underlined the importance of UNESCO for Germany, and the Director-General thanked for the strength of Germany's engagement, and leadership, notably in the context of the Executive Board.
