9th Extraordinary Session of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST)

UNESCO Paris, France, 12-16 September 2016

The public meetings of the 23rd (Ordinary) Session of the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee (IBC); the Joint Session of the IBC and the IGBC; the Extraordinary Session of the IGBC; and the public meetings of the 9th Extraordinary Session of the UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) will be held in Room XI at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris) on 14 and 15 (morning) September 2016.

The first part of the morning of 14 September 2016 will be devoted to agenda items common to the IBC, the IGBC and COMEST, namely the progress report of the UNESCO bioethics and ethics of science programme, and an update on the revision of the Recommendation on the Status of Scientific Researchers (1974). These will be followed by discussion of the two main work topics of the IBC for 2016-2017: the bioethical response to the situation of refugees and big data and health.

Finally, a short extraordinary session of the IGBC will be convened from 4.20 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. to discuss the follow-up to the recommendations of the External Auditor’s “Report on the governance of UNESCO and dependant funds, programmes and entities” (Document 38 C/23), as requested by the President of the General Conference in a letter dated 6 April 2016, and in line with 38 C/Resolution 101, paragraph 5.

The morning of 15 September 2016 will be devoted to the two main work topics of COMEST for 2016-2017: water ethics and robotics ethics.

The working languages for the sessions will be English and French. All relevant documents for the sessions will be prepared in these two languages and will be made available on this website prior to the meetings.

In accordance with the Rules and Procedures of the IGBC, simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be provided for the meetings on 14 September 2016. Furthermore, in accordance with the Rules and Procedures of COMEST, simultaneous interpretation in English and French will be provided for the meetings on the morning of 15 September 2016.

Meetings reserved for IBC and COMEST members only will be organized on 12, 13, 15 (after the closing of the public session), and 16 September 2016.
