The International Hydrological Programme (IHP) is the only intergovernmental programme of the United Nations system dedicated to water-related research, the management of water resources, education and capacity-building. The IHP works with methodologies applied to hydrological studies and to training and education on water sciences. Over time, its role in the management of these resources for sustainable development and in the adaptation to climate and environmental changes has taken on greater relevance, especially in terms of our dependence upon water resources, on systems subject of stress and the social responses to this situation.

UNESCO Santiago is coordinating two projects supervised by the IHP which are aimed at the management of water resources, by designing strategies to reduce the countries’ vulnerability to extreme situations and the risks to sustainable development. One approach is geared towards the Andean glaciers, which have been severely affected by global warming. This approach uses multinational activities to generate scientific, socioeconomic and political responses to mitigate the impact of these trends. Also, UNESCO Santiago is working to reduce society’s vulnerability to extreme situations, creating an early drought warning system and helping to manage climate risk within the region.
