Eritrea joined UNESCO on September 2, 1993. It is covered by the multi-country UNESCO Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

In recent years, cooperation between Eritrea and UNESCO has concentrated on putting into action a project to train teachers. The programmes for primary education have also been enhanced, notably by integrating the education of human rights into them.

Eritrea is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
