Mali joined the Organization on November 7, 1960. The UNESCO Cluster Office in Bamako plays an important role in cooperation with Mali. UNESCO is the lead agency in the Ten-Year (2000-2010) Programme for the Development of Education (PRODEC) in Mali, the national commission for informal education in Mali and Education for All.

Mali is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).

Mali holds two UNESCO chairs and, as of September 2006, the country boasted 153 schools as members of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
