The United Republic of Tanzania joined UNESCO on March 6, 1962. A UNESCO Cluster Office is established in the country in Dar es Salaam.

The country is an active member of the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ).

The United Republic of Tanzania also participates in UNESCO's Teacher Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA), a 10-year project aimed at restructuring national teacher policies in 46 sub-Saharan countries.

The United Republic of Tanzania is one of the eight countries which have volunteered to participate in the “One UN” pilot initiative. This will test how the UN family – with its many and diverse agencies - can deliver in a more coordinated way at country level.
