Kuwait joined UNESCO on November 18, 1960. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Doha, Qatar.

The reform of education and preparation of a national strategy for education has been an active collaborative zone between UNESCO and Kuwait.

Currently, Kuwait has 36 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Projects Network (ASPnet). The newly created UNESCO/Emir Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah Prize for Research and Training in Special Needs Education for the Mentally Disabled, first awarded on 4 December 2006, was made possible thanks to funding by the government of Kuwait.
