The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya joined UNESCO on June 27, 1953. Opened in 1991, the UNESCO Office Rabat is a cluster office representing the Organization in Algeria, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.
Libya holds a UNESCO chair and has three UNEVOC centres. Education is a major field of cooperation between the country and UNESCO. Since Libya’s independence, this cooperation has permitted illiteracy to be reduced from 90% to 30%.
