Somalia joined UNESCO on November 15, 1960. It is covered by the UNESCO cluster Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The introduction in late 2004 of institutions of democratic transition represented the return of peace to Somalia after many years of war. The country's cooperation with UNESCO - which focused notably on supplying emergency assistance in the field of education to Somali refugees -is also progressively returning to normal.

In the field of education, an atlas on Somalia and bordering countries, An Atlas for Somalis, was published in February 2005 in Somali and English.
