Bangladesh joined UNESCO on October 27, 1972. The Organization has a National Office there, based in Dhaka.

Despite its efforts to meet the objectives of Education for All (EFA) set in Dakar in 2000, 58.9% of the country’s adults are illiterate, down from 65.8% in 1990, with a large disparity between genders (Source: UNESCO Institute for Statistics).

Bangladesh participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. As of September 2006, Bangladesh has 36 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
