Sri Lanka joined UNESCO on November 14, 1949. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in New Delhi, India.

Though the country has suffered a long period of instability, it has continued to actively take part in all the domains of UNESCO. An important collaboration involves the efforts towards peace education in Sri Lanka.

The latest cooperation involves activities for rebuilding schools and reconstructing libraries damaged by the tsunami of 2004. As of September 2006, Sri Lanka has 25 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
