Features

Creative Clusters
Business and culture, often seen as mutually opposed, are uniting to create an entirely new economic landscape where creativity and culture are essential raw materials of the production cycle just as coal and steel have been since the industrial revolution.

Publications

Below are listed books of interest to those involved in the cultural industries.

Flight of the Creative Class, Richard Florida, Collins, 2005
Following up on The Rise of the Creative Class (2002), Florida argues that if America continues to make it harder for some of the world's most talented students and workers to come here, they'll go to other countries eager to tap into their creative capabilities—as will American citizens fed up with what they view as an increasingly repressive environment.
The Creative City: a Toolkit for Urban Innovators, Charles Landry, Comedia/Earthscan, 2002
The transition from industrial to post-industrial societies, together with the globalisation of the world economy, are creating new challenges for cities in the twenty-first century. As wealth is increasingly created by ideas as opposed to the manufacturing of material goods, Charles Landry highlights the need for a creative approach to urban development, one that is based on the exploitation of local cultural resources and the centrality of imagination.
Creative Cities, Urban Development and the Information Society,’ Jan Verwijnen and Panu Lehtovuori, University of Art and Design Helsinki (UIAH), 2005
Creative Cities is a collection of essays, together with key presentations given at the Creative City conference, held in Helsinki in 1996. The book analyses strategies and effects of cultural innovations and cultural industries on urban development, within the context of the information society.
