The meeting’s main objective is to define a scientific framework for the identification and recognition of sites related to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge phenomenon and to define a more precise framework for a serial nomination on the World Heritage List.
During the meeting, there will be an inscription ceremony for the World Heritage property of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture, inscribed in on the World Heritage List 2004.
The outcome of this meeting will contribute to a better identification and understanding of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge concept for World Heritage properties, in close association with other international conventions and programmes (MAB, Marine programmes, etc.). Its recommendations will be submitted to the World Heritage Committee at its 32nd session in Quebec, Canada (2–10 July 2008).
The meeting is organized by the Portuguese authorities in Pico/Azores in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
