UNESCO Doha disseminates Research on Momentum for Education beyond 2015

Within the framework of the QNRF-funded Research Study on UNESCO Doha in collaboration with the National Commission of UNESCO in Qatar, Ministry of Education and Qatar University (QU) held the Second Meeting of the Panel of Experts on the Research Project, “Momentum for Education Beyond 2015,” at the Grand Hyatt, Doha, Qatar on 4 May 2016.

The main purpose of the meeting was to present the key findings of the draft full report of the research study and to elicit feedback and inputs from the panel of experts prior to submission to QNRF.

The first panel of Experts Meeting was held in June 2014 to launch the research and to introduce the panel of experts to the research study. In this meeting, the panel of experts agreed on their roles and commitment to contribute and assure the rigor and relevance of the research work. 

The Second Panel of Experts Meeting was attended by delegates from the GCC particularly Oman, Kuwait, UAE and Qatar. , Qatar University staff, ROTA, ABEGS, and UNESCO.

At the Opening Session, Dr. Anna Paolini, Director of UNESCO Doha emphasized the importance of the findings of the research study that will contribute in setting up priorities and firming up national indicators towards achieving Education 2030 goals. Dr. Hamda Al Sulaiti, Secretary General of National Commission of UNESCO in Qatar reinforced the importance of this research in Qatar and provided support of the MoE in conducting this study. Dr. Yahyah Al Nakeeb from Qatar University, College of Education emphasized the importance of the impact of the study in improving learning outcomes and school systems in the GCC.   

Faryal Khan, Programme Specialist for UNESCO Doha presented regional analysis covering 6 GCC states of the performance of education systems in the GCC. Dr. Helen Abadzi presented an updated literature review and focused on the importance of improving reading at the early stage of students’ grade level.  Ms. Maricel Fernandez presented a country case study focused on Kuwait and highlighted significant findings that Kuwait Ministry of Education has now considered in implementing educational reform policies to tackle the problems and challenges as evidenced from this research and other related researches.  

The panel of experts who were present in the meeting include: Dr. Hamda Al Sulaiti, Qatar; Professor Yahya Al Nakeeb from Qatar University; Mr. Mohamed Saleem Al Yaqoubi, Sultanate of Oman; Dr. Badriya Al Khaldi and Dr.  Fatima Al Hashem from Kuwait and Dr. Faryal Khan, UNESCO Doha amongst others.

The final outcome of the research will be communicated to the Panel of Experts and will disseminated through the organization and conduct of regional and national launch.
