Young South Sudanese actors and athletes take on violence, HIV

Adjumani, Uganda – Weeks after violence erupted in in South Sudan, Mike Marchar fled for his life. He found safe haven in the Ayilo Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda, but lost track of his family. He doesn’t know whether they are still alive. The carnage he witnessed has stayed with him.

Proportion of women and children seeking refuge in Europe increasing

The proportion of women and children arriving as refugees in Europe is increasing, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said. Conflict and instability in Syria and Iraq as well as a number of countries in Africa has forced millions of people to flee their homes, a large number of whom are women.

Harmful traditions contribute to traumatic birth injuries in Chad

N’DJAMENA, Chad – Like many child brides, Micheline Yotoudjim suffered terribly after she was married. She was married off at age 14, became pregnant at 16, and then experienced a prolonged, obstructed labour. Her baby was eventually delivered through a Caesarean section, but died four days later.

Fresh allegations of sexual abuse made against UN peacekeepers in Central African Republic

The United Nations is investigating new allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse and other misconduct by peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR), this time by forces under the world body’s flag, the top UN official there said, as further steps are being put in place to combat the scourge.
