Post-disaster engineering field investigation of building damage, Bohol, Philippines

UNESCO is committed to prioritize disaster risk reduction through policy recommendations. It provides an interface for disaster risk reduction between scientists, policy-makers and civil society. UNESCO prepares technical documents that serve national and local governments to better mitigate the risks related to natural hazards. UNESCO is also engaged in disaster risk reduction policy analysis and in the provision of recommendations and guidelines to Member States.

UNESCO Projects

  • International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disaster (IPRED): IPRED has a system to dispatch experts to earthquake stricken countries in order to carry out post-earthquake field investigations. The investigations result in technical reports that interpret buildings’ failure, examine current policy framework and recommend required steps for improving policy environment related to prevention, retrofitting, and compliance measures.
  • Gender Equality and Disaster Risk Reduction: The programme explores how gender perspective can be better integrated in policy guidelines for disaster risk reduction with an emphasis on education, and policies can be promoted with particular attention to the key role of women as community leaders in disaster preparedness awareness programmes.
