The Safety Guide for Journalists issued by Reporters Without Borders is aimed at providing guidelines and practical advice for all those who risk running into an enemy of press freedom on a street corner or on a deserted road. Such a situation can quickly test the difference between a happy-go-lucky journalist who set off unprepared and a reporter who packed the right survival kit of experience and equipment.
Scholarly communications
Researchers, scholars and scientists’ main business is scholarly communication. However, the term gained popularity only in the 1970s, as access to peer reviewed and scholarly communication became difficult. This module has four units covering introduction to scholarly communication, peer reviewed journals, electronica journals and databases, and the serials crisis. At the end of this module, the learner is expected to be able to explain philosophy, mission, and objectives of scholarly communication, describe the process and different channels of scholarly communication, and discuss its dysfunction.
SciELO: 15 Years of Open Access: an analytic study of Open Access and scholarly communication
Open Access has been recognized as an implicit agenda to deal with the knowledge challenge in the future. The unique stakeholder composition of UNESCO gives it a privileged position to act as a go-between the existing knowledge-divide between countries, and to identify good practices in this area. With over 1.0 million hits per day, the SciELO Network has been a beacon to spread scientific knowledge contained in journals and books. This publication on SciELO has been prepared with the aim to document a best practice of Open Access Publication. It is the first case study of this kind, which appreciates the positive contribution of SciELO and, hopefully, will provide others with an excellent example to follow.

Cyberspace is open to all languages of the world, since its infrastructure is not subject to a central authority which can decide how it should be used. In writing this article, the author tried to give an answer to the following question: how to ensure that a language which is poorly endowed in linguistic and/or information technology (IT) resources, not to mention human resources, may find its proper place in cyberspace and be active there?
