UNESCO publishes Russian version of its training kit on education for sustainable development

UNESCO’s Office in Almaty has released the Russian version of Media as Partners in Education for Sustainable Development: A Training and Resource Kit, which was originally published in English in 2008. The kit was translated into Russian and adapted for the Central Asian context in cooperation with the Digital Informational Network on Environment and Sustainable Development in Central Asia and Russia (CARNet).
This training kit attempts to provide media professionals with basic information about some priority issues for sustainable development. It also contains practical exercises to inspire investigative reporting and draws links to existing experience that may enrich the information resources of media professionals.
The first five chapters in Section 1 of the publication provide basic information on climate change, forests and fisheries, fresh water, biodiversity and pollution. In Section 2, the idea of sustainable development is placed in a wider context: the reader will find there some of the questions that any sceptical journalist would ask, as well as a few hints on how to run a relevant story and to make the subject matter more attractive. The third and last section moves towards the future by taking a glimpse into reported best practices, and imagining what people would have to give up to accelerate gains for a stable, peaceful, contented, in one word “sustainable” living.
The kit addresses issues that are being discussed on the social, economic and environmental fronts. It does not pretend to know all the answers, but draws on existing experience and recommends resources for further inquiry and research. It encourages the media to engage in public participation and to debate improvements that can lead to sustainable development. It also seeks to contribute to media awareness and understanding of sustainability.
