Official visit of the Director-General to Niger

The Director-General and the President discussed security issues in West Africa, including strategies to counter the rise of violent extremism. The Director-General congratulated President Issoufou for his policy towards refugees.

The Director-General and the President discussed security issues in West Africa, including strategies to counter the rise of violent extremism. The Director-General congratulated President Issoufou for his policy towards refugees.

"As violent extremists seek to make us believe that living together is impossible, Niger has chosen to respond with values, with culture, with generosity, welcoming thousands of refugees, including children, fleeing war, intolerance and persecution, "she said.

The Director General thanked the President for being awarded the high distinction of "Commander of the National Order of Merit of Niger" by the Foreign Minister Ibrahim Yacoubou, noting that she is honored to accept this distinction as recognition for all UNESCO activities.

President Mohamadou Issoufou thanked the Director General and affirmed that "combating violent extremism is the top priority”. He reviewed the strategic priorities of government policy to include quality education, managing demographic growth, development of the country and national reconciliation.

The Director-General held a meeting with the ministers whose mandates are in line with the objectives of UNESCO, and met with Prime Minister Mr. Brigi Rafini, who reaffirmed that girls’ education remains a top priority for the government.

In Niamey, the Director General visited the University Abdou Moumouni, which benefited from the support of UNESCO and UEMOA for the computerization of higher education, and the National Museum Boubou.

"We must nurture culture to educate for peace, teach tolerance, make understand that accepting cultural diversity in our history helps us to accept and promote cultural diversity in our present, " said Irina Bokova.
