Overview of work opportunities at UNESCO
UNESCO offers a broad range of work opportunities.
Posts in the Organization are mainly filled by people in occupations linked to the Organization’s main activities – culture, education, science and communication.
There are also opportunities for employment in other occupational fields such as administration, finance, human resources and information technology.
Expertise, a professional attitude, the ability to work in an international intergovernmental organization and a highly multicultural environment, multilingualism, team spirit and openness to dialogue are the values shared by all the professions within UNESCO.
Working in many posts at UNESCO also means international mobility: you will be working either at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, or in one of the UNESCO field offices around the world. |
If you would like to work at UNESCO, there are various possibilities:
IN A PROFESSIONAL POST
You will be part of UNESCO’s global action, providing, at Headquarters or in the field, the expertise and coordination necessary for the planning and execution of the Organization’s various programmes and projects.
AS A TRANSLATOR OR INTERPRETER
Depending on your skills and experience, you can join either the permanent staff of UNESCO translators and interpreters or the pool of freelance translators.
IN A GENERAL SERVICE POST
You will be carrying out technical or administrative tasks within the various UNESCO services, either at Headquarters or in the field, depending on where you live.
AS A TEMPORARY ASSISTANT
UNESCO occasionally hires temporary staff in various fields either at its Headquarters or in its field offices throughout the world.
AS A YOUNG PROFESSIONAL
Each year the Young Professionals Programme offers to a dozen or so young graduates or professionals just starting their career, from unrepresented or under-represented countries, the opportunity for a career in an international organization.
AS AN ASSOCIATE EXPERT
If you are under the age of 32 and a national of a country which contributes to the Associate Experts’ Scheme, you can gain two years of professional experience either at UNESCO Headquarters or in a UNESCO field office.
AS AN INTERN
If you are a student holding a first university degree, a researcher or a national civil servant, you can do an internship of one to three months at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris or in a UNESCO field office.
