UNESCO and Sweden sign a Framework Agreement and a Funding Agreement

In August 2010, UNESCO and Sweden, through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) signed a Framework Agreement covering the overall extrabudgetary cooperation, and well as a Programme Cooperation Agreement (PCA) covering a funding period of four years (2010-2013) for a total amount of SEK 92 320 000 (approx. USD 12 million).

The signature of a Framework Agreement and Programme Cooperation Agreement bear witness to strengthened institutional cooperation between UNESCO and Sida with funding to be channeled to areas identified in the Complementary Additional Programme (CAP), which is UNESCO’s main tool for programming extrabudgetary activities and for resource mobilization.

During 2010-2013, Sweden and UNESCO will focus on the following themes to be generously funded under the above PCA:

- Education (CapEFA, GMR, ESD)
- Institutions (IIEP, UIL)
- Natural Science (UNESCO Programme on Innovation of International Development, the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP))
- Gender.

Sweden is amongst the most long-standing and generous donors to UNESCO.
