Special lunch to endorse the Safe Schools Declaration

© UNESCO
Education under Attack

The Safe Schools Declaration event is organized on the opening day of the General Conference with the attendance of H.R.H Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova.

The event - organized by the Norwegian, Nigerian and Argentinian Permanent Delegations to UNESCO - raises awareness on the impact that military use has on learning institutions, and highlights the importance of ensuring lifelong learning opportunities for all, also during situations of armed conflicts.

The Safe Schools Declaration is a joint initiative developed through state consultations led by Norway and Argentina in Geneva throughout the first half of 2015. It provides States the opportunity to express broad political support for the protection and continuation of education in armed conflict. The Declaration was opened for endorsement at the Oslo Conference on Safe Schools convened by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 29 May 2015, and so far a total of 49 states have endorsed the declaration.

The Safe Schools Declaration is open for new endorsements and the event will provide an opportunity for states to endorse the Declaration. All Member States of UNESCO are invited to attend the event (information was forwarded 21.10.2015). Please note that the availability of space at the venue is restricted.

Attendance by invitation only.
