  home_science_004.jpg
Since its inception in 1992, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme in the Natural Sciences has established almost 200 UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN networks, to enhance academic solidarity and excellence in both North-South and South-South cooperation.

These Chairs and networks are important partners for the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO in its quest for promoting Science, environment and sustainable development, aimed to improve human security through a better management of the environment; and Capacity-building in science and technology for development, that seeks to enhance human and institutional capacities in science and technology to allow the widest possible participation in the knowledge society, and to adapt science policy to societal needs.

In the coming years, UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks will be mobilized to contribute to the following general key objectives:
  • Advancement and sharing of scientific knowledge
  • Application of scientific knowledge to sustainable development and technology
  • Contribution of science and technology to peace
  • Understanding the role of ethics in science and technology
  • Enhancement of productive linkages between scientists and decision makers.
