White House Conference on Global Literacy hailed as great success

UNESCO is hailing White House Conference on Global Literacy on 18 September as a great success. The Conference was hosted in New York by Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States and Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade. It was attended by President George Bush, U.S Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, First Ladies, First Spouses and decision-makers from around the world.
The conference was aimed at mobilizing governments into action to reduce the world’s adult illiteracy rates by half by 2015. According to UNESCO’s statistics, some 781 million people over the age of 15 can neither read nor write. Two thirds of these people are women. Another 100 million children are out-of-school, which means they are also deprived of literacy.
