The Spirit of Bali –using new and traditional communication technologies to build peace
More than 200 participants - representatives of UNESCO Member States, government ministers, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, the private sector and media - adopted “The Spirit of Bali” declaration at the end of an international conference in Bali, Indonesia, on 23 January.

The text was adopted at the close of the three-day “Global Forum, Power of Peace” - organized by the Government of Indonesia and the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO - on how to harness new and traditional media to build peace and promote dialogue.

The Spirit of Bali foresees that a new network, the Power of Peace Network, “contribute to enhance cultural self expression and interaction, inter-faith dialogue, and to bridge the information gap between people.” The declaration further calls on UNESCO “to explore the way forward to create an innovative mechanism to promote peace through media and ICTs [information and communication technologies].”

The network is intended to involve the internet as well as film, radio, and television and should utilize all possible delivery systems including online, wireless, and satellite broadcasting.

Abdul Waheed Khan, Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Communication and Information, welcomed the outcome of the Forum and said he was “looking forward to working on the development of the Power of Peace Network and translating the Spirit of Bali into practical action.”
